Icebreaker Activity: Scrabble Names

Ideal for groups whose members are unfamiliar with one another, Scrabble Names is a great icebreaker activity to get your group on their feet and engaged while getting to know each person’s name in a fun way.

Time Needed: 15 minutes

Group Size: 6+ (Challenge and fun increase with group size)

Materials: Scrabble Names handout, writing utensils

Directions: Give each person a copy of the Scrabble Names handout and a writing utensil. Ask everyone to write their own name horizontally in the center row of squares. Explain that the group will have 10 minutes to add as many names to their page as possible. Each name must build off a letter of another name, like the game Scrabble or a crossword puzzle. Show an example of a sheet that has already been filled out.

After 10 minutes, call “time” and instruct the group to remain standing where they are. Ask everyone to count to see who has the most names on their sheet. Have that person join you at the front of the room. Ask the person to call out a name that is connected to their name.  The person whose name is called comes up and joins the first person and repeats the process. Encourage participants to do this quickly and form a circle as group members are called up. Once everyone is in the circle, begin with the person who started the circle and ask everyone to share their name and their favorite from a category you choose (food, music, hobby, etc.).

Once everyone has shared, thank the group for their participation and ask them to return to their seats.

Debrief Questions:

  • Why is it important that we learn and use each other’s names?
  • What are some techniques we can use to help us?
  • What can we do if we forget someone’s name?
