Icebreaker: Beach Ball Toss

Beach Ball Toss

Ideal for groups whose members are unfamiliar with one another, Beach Ball Toss is the perfect icebreaker activity to get to know each person’s name and a new fact about them in a fun way.

Time Needed: 10-15 minutes

Group Size: Any (If you have a very large group, you may split them into smaller groups.)

Materials:  Inflated beach ball with questions written on it

Examples of questions/prompts you may include on your beach ball:

  • Favorite musician
  • My dream vacation
  • What hobbies do you enjoy?
  • Favorite app
  • How do you spend your free time?
  • A superpower I wish I had
  • Favorite food
  • Why do you choose to be drug free?
  • Something new I want to learn
  • Who is a leader you look up to?
  • Favorite tv show
  • Who can you ask for advice?

Directions: Have your group stand in a circle. Explain that you have a beach ball with questions/prompts written on it, and participants will be answering these and sharing with the group. Tell them you will toss the ball to a group member, and whichever question their right thumb lands on, they will share their answer with the group. Make sure they say their name before they answer the question. Once they have said their name and answered the question, they will toss the ball on to someone else in the group. They cannot throw the ball to someone on their immediate right or left or to someone who has already had a turn. Continue to toss the ball around the circle until each person has introduced themselves and answered a question.
