Shining Bright: Celebrating Lights On Afterschool

Every year, communities across the nation come together to celebrate Lights On Afterschool, a day dedicated to showcasing the important role afterschool programs play in the lives of young people, families and communities. Organized by the Afterschool Alliance, this nationwide event highlights how afterschool programs keep kids safe, inspire them to learn and help working families.

Mark your calendar: Lights On Afterschool is on October 23, 2025!

The Power of Afterschool

Afterschool programs are more than just safe spaces for young people after the school day ends. They provide opportunities for students to:

  • Explore new interests and discover passions—from STEM to the arts, sports and service.
  • Develop critical life skills like teamwork, leadership and communication.
  • Connect with mentors who encourage growth, resilience and positive choices.
  • Access academic support that helps them thrive in school and beyond.

Afterschool programs are a powerful example of youth development initiatives that build protective factors—like supportive relationships, positive engagement and skill-building opportunities—that help young people avoid substance use and other risky behaviors. By providing safe, structured spaces during the hours when youth are most at risk, these programs foster a sense of belonging and connection. Caring adult mentors guide participants in developing coping strategies, setting goals and making healthy choices. Over time, this consistent support not only reduces risk behaviors but also promotes confidence, resilience and lifelong well-being.

By celebrating Lights On Afterschool, we shine a spotlight on the positive impact these programs have on millions of youth nationwide. Afterschool programs are helping young people dream bigger, achieve more and build brighter futures. Each program is a reflection of the creativity, dedication and passion of staff and volunteers who believe in the potential of every child.

Why Lights On Afterschool Matters

In addition to celebrating successes, this important day also raises awareness that many children and families still face barriers to access. Lights On Afterschool calls attention to these unmet needs and reminds us of the importance of expanding opportunities so that every child can benefit.

According to Afterschool Alliance’s fifth edition of America After 3PM, released in October 2025:

  • 88% of parents in Georgia support public funding for afterschool programs
  • For every child in an afterschool program in Georgia, four more are waiting to get in
  • Cost, transportation and lack of available and/or conveniently located programs are often cited as the biggest barriers to accessing programming
  • 93% of Georgia parents are satisfied with their child’s afterschool program
  • 853,224 Georgia children are NOT enrolled in afterschool programs, but would be if a program were available

The more families, neighbors and community members who celebrate, the stronger the message to decision-makers that afterschool programs are worth protecting and expanding.
